Abracadabra: Why Differently Abled Children in Kerala Will Be Trained to Become Magicians

When it comes to magic, there can never be too much of it in the world. And now, thanks to a new initiative by the state government in Kerala, 400 differently abled children will be trained to become magicians in their own right. The Kerala Social Security Mission (KSSM), under the Social Justice Department of Government of Kerala, has tied up with the State Initiative on Disabilities to put together this unique programme called MPower. Children who are differently abled from different schools will be placed under the tutelage of well-known magician Gopinath Muthukad and his team.

Once the training is completed at the Magic Academy, a group of children who show the most aptitude for the craft will be selected to form a group.

This motley crew of young magicians will then become the ambassadors of the state government's campaign called Anuyatra, which works towards sensitising the public on the problems faced by the differently abled.  The gang is slated to perform in front of dignitaries is an official capacity on June 7, 2017.

This is among the many initiatives driven by KSSM, which tries to raise awareness about differently abled members of society. KSSM also organises disability certification camps, a one-of-its-kind programme in India that advocates the rights of the differently abled to gram panchayats. Apart from this, the organisation runs a parallel programme called the Cancer Suraksha wherein children under the age of 18 are given free cancer treatment based on their eligibility.
