On November 1, 2006 (Kerala formation day) residents of the Niravu Residents Association, Vengeri in Kozhikode, decided to actively take to organic farming and ensure that every member household had a backyard vegetable garden. This association has 101 houses, and from 21-25 December 2017, these residents will host a six-day exhibition called Midori.

Midori is a Japanese word that means ‘green’.

The name Midori was selected to honour the Japanese, who with their sheer grit and power of determination rebuilt their nation after the Second World War attacks.

Those interested in the 101 sustainable models in agriculture, waste management, water conservation, energy conservation and information technology that ‘NiravuVengeri’ has been propagating successfully for the past ten years will have a chance to learn from the residents themselves.

As reported in The Hindu, the stalls will feature models related to energy and water conservation besides waste management and organic farming. Mushroom cultivation, mini solar plant and LED bulb manufacturing will be some of the models to be displayed at the stalls, while one has been turned literally into a museum of endangered seeds. Visitors will get to learn the working of a biogas plant as well as wine production.
