How often do you see a woman serving cocktails and alcoholic drinks in bars?

For those living in metropolitan cities, the question wouldn’t seem too astounding. But for a small town like Thodupuzha in Kerala, it is indeed something unheard of.

In fact, it is quite unlikely that one would find women waiters in bars across the country, let alone Kerala.

With most professions across the world slowly breaking gender stereotypes, one witnesses a steady increase in the number of women entering fields that were previously considered male-centric.

So why should bars be an exception?

Employing two women waiters in its bar, Hotel Joance Regency at Thodupuzha, Idukki district has indeed raised the bar for women, not just in the region, but the country as well.

“Women are working in every sector, and there is no room for taboos,” Jilmon George, who is the managing director of the hotel, told The Times of India.

Adding that the facility plans to recruit more women in the coming days, Jilmon also stated that the women employees feel empowered and work in a safe environment where they don’t face any harassment from the customers.

“It is a work I do with complete satisfaction. I am happy to work here and have never experienced any difficulty with customers here,” validated Raji, who is a native of Kuthattukulam from Ernakulam district.

Following her employment and work satisfaction, many of her friends have shown interest in the field. “I recommend that more women should come to this area of employment. There is no room for apprehensions,” she added.

Breaking taboos with this phenomenal step, the Thodupuzha hotel has not only paved the way for more women to enter the field but also set an example for the hospitality industry.
